Prior to the loading of ironstone into the empty wagons the wagons were weighed individually on the quarry railway weighbridge. With the wagon weights recorded in the weighbridge office the wagons were then taken into the quarry for loading. Once loaded the wagons on the departing train again passed over the weighbridge for the loaded weights to be recorded. The information was transferred onto a card wagon label and then attached to each wagon for its journey to the steelworks. Comparison of the two weights enabled calculation of the weight of ironstone (and hence value ) being delivered.
