FEPOW Memorial Locomotive Appeal
“to keep going the spirit that kept them going”
Emerging plans that would have seen the Rocks-by-Rail* Museum’s Far Eastern
Prisoner of War (FEPOW) Memorial Steam Locomotive SINGAPORE returned to
steam are under threat following the theft of parts of the locomotives valve gear. The
loss of these vital components has put the potential future of the historic exhibit as a
working memorial at serious risk as trying to manufacture replacement new parts to
replace those stolen items and carry out other repairs to return it to operational
condition will prove very expensive for the small volunteer run museum.
The museum hopes to continue with its restoration plans but the associated costs
will now be much higher. Repairs to the boiler, platework and mechanical parts will
now have to include the manufacture and fitting of new parts to replace those stolen.
Consequently the Museum has launched a public appeal to help fund this work
which would see the locomotive returned to steam rather than remain a static exhibit.
The museum charity would welcome any donations to enable the locomotive to be
restored as a working war memorial to the courage, sacrifice and comradeship of
War Eastern Prisoners of War 1941-1945.
A target of £40,000 has been set for the appeal fund and any donations by way of
cheques should be made out to Rutland Railway Museum and handed in at the
museum or sent to:
