Originally intended to feature our diesel fleet, our October operating day will focus on our central locomotive area. As our Barclay steam locomotive AB1931 hauls passenger trains around the Museum, and our quarry rumbles into operation with Ruston diggers loading ore trains, the feature event will be a chance to view the track laying skills of our ‘Platelaying’ team in the yard area. As our season long programme to build a modern inspection and maintenance ‘pit’ in our reconstructed locomotive preparation yard, visitors will see at close hand how the sleepers, rails and point work are constructed. At close hand, watch the team spacing the timbers and rails before fishplates are located to secure the track layout.
